Summary
  • Annotation. Andiamo is a refreshing memoir about the migration of Italians from Sicily to Australia. The author, Angelo Indovino, was born in the southern Italian town of Valguarnera, Sicily but his family migrated to Melbourne, Australia when he was ten. He found himself in a new place with new people who spoke a new language and observed new customs. Valguarnera's ancient Carrapipani cultural heritage is put to the test in modern Melbourne. The Australian Dream pulled with the force of a strong magnet, promising material wealth, but also harboring the danger of being hurled into a cultural void. With just the right mix of personal, family and historical perspectives, Indovino invites us to share the Italian migration to Australia. We learn about his childhood, the difficulties of the farming life back in rural Sicily and the challenges faced in a new continent. They were used to working hard so they were able to overcome difficulties and achieve success in Australia despite an absence of formal training and limited language ability. The pride of the Italian immigrants is apparent in every page of Andiamo. The author is not afraid to express his feelings of love and admiration for the members of his family who he considers to be pioneers in Australia. He is in awe of their accomplishments and identifies their formula for success. They were willing to work hard and help one another. He is very aware that he could not have become the person he is without the strength of his background. This work is a celebration of the legacy of their heritage. It documents a unique time and a singular experience generously shared with the rest of humanity. It is a convincing testimony to the will and grit of a people whose experience deserves to be remembered and shared. We are fortunate to have Andiamo to remind us of the many lives it recounts that were very much worth living -- the lives of those who probably do not think of themselves as actors in history, but who have an important and moving story to tell us all.
