Sobering that it is now 31 years since this book came out. Surely Trengove, if he's still around, might consider a second edition. Much water has flowed under the bridge since then.
The book was written when traditional mineral and commodities were a major part of Australian exports. And when there was a great belief in and fear of the Club of Rome's projections of the limits to growth. BHP was then the Big Australian, as is made clear in the text. It dominated the economy in a way that is hard for a contemporary reader to appreciate, especially if she is not from Australia. The book describes in detail BHP's massive interests in mining, oil and gas, and its contribution to Australia's export earnings.
Reading the book today [2006] offers some slight irony. Due above all to China's spectacular growth, BHP has been earning massive profits lately. Not unlike some of the years covered in the book. Though then, China was a negligible factor.
