  • A rock lobster aquaculture industry based on on-growing wild-caught pueruli (late larval stage) is likely to commence in Tasmania in the near future. To ensure that puerulus extraction has no effect on lobster stocks, it is proposed that after a year of on-growing, a number of lobsters be released equivalent to the proportion that would have survived in the wild (estimated at a maximum of 25%). Information on survival of released animals is required before this method of compensation can be employed. Acoustic tracking over 14 days showed movement, behaviour and habitat choice to be similar for wild-caught and on-grown juveniles. Movement data were used to develop protocols for short-term survival estimation of visible-tagged juvenile lobsters. Six hundred tagged wild-caught control and on-grown lobsters were released on an area of patch reef in the Derwent River. Resightings and movement were recorded by divers for 1 month. Survival modeling revealed high survival for re-seeded juveniles, and no difference was detected in survival of wild or on-grown lobsters. While these results are promising for the future of re-seeding, trials will need to be repeated in a wide range of habitats and localities to be of value to the culture industry.
