Biography
  • William "Bill" Beach was born in Surrey England, on 6th December 1850. He was the son of Alexander Beach, a blacksmith, and his wife, Mary, nee Gibbons. Young Beach was two when the family migrated to NSW and joined a friend called John Sculfer on his farm at Albion Park.In 1873, Beach had married Sarah Dunley and they had six sons and six daughters. He died at his home at Dapto on 28th January 1935. There is a memorial to this great rower in Cabarita Park, Concord and Beach Park, on Mullet Creek at Dapto, is named after him.

The men are not 'unknown' they are former champion scullers at the time of the article. Their names and a key are given beneath the picture. They are, (1) central figure, William Beach (2) at the 11 o'clock position in the 'circle' Elias Laycock (3) Michael Rush, at 1 o'clock, (4) at '9 o'clock' James Punch with the mutton-chop whiskers (5) at 2 o'clock Edward Trickett, (6) at 8 o'clock) Neil Matterson. (7) 4 o'clock William Hickey (8) at 7 o'clock Thomas McGrath and (9) at 5 o'clock Richard Green. The image may be found in the Town and Country Journal, of December 4, 1886, on page 1170. Short biographies of each man are on the following pages of this issue, which is readily available on microfilm at libraries like the NLA, SLNSW etc, and the images is often in better condition than the one shown here.
