'Whitening the Songlines' is the first monograph in the ASME Monograph Series. This paper was first delivered at the 7th ASME National Conference held in Alice Springs in July 1990. The aim of this conference, symbolically held in the Australian Heartlands, was to bring music educators together in a search for personal and professional meaning through journeying, not only into the red desert country of Uluru, but into their own meaning as Australians and as carriers of a special part of the culture.
