James G. Blaine, Speaker of the House, has had a conversation with Brigham Young about Utah. Blaine has declared that Utah will never be admitted as a state while Mormons practice polygamy and that the federal government will continue to assert authority in the territory. President Grant has taken a special interest in seeing Congress resolve the Utah problem, but the legislation has been hindered. It is suggested that Brigham Young has been bribing people who have influence in the government to help stall any action against Utah. Young will send an apostle, Cannon, to represent the Mormons in Congress. The article also tells the history of Brigham Young’s recent arrest and release and describes the questionable state of the court system in Utah.
