  • Excerpts from sermons given by Brigham Young and others, as recorded in the Deseret News. The Mormons are free and should not be in bondage to any government; they will not bear any more oppression. Young declares that the invading troops are illegal and that if they attempt to invade they will “melt away.” He expresses anger that the U.S. government asked the Mormons to fight for the United States in 1846. The Mormons will provide no provisions for the troops, so the army will not be able to sustain itself. President Buchanan will have a “yoke on his neck” for his actions. Elder Kimball calls Senator Douglas a “rascal.”
