  • In an essay about the biblical basis of polygamy, the writer justifies polygamy through examples from the Old and New Testaments. He suggests that the Mormons, who have been persecuted for embracing the practice, are simply “yearning to revert to the hallowed rites of old” and should be applauded for their simple faith. The essay is dedicated to Reverend John Henry Hopkins, “an admirer . . . of the institutions of old.”
