  • Captain Marcy has arrived at Fort Leavenworth. The army is establishing a permanent station in Utah. The Mormons are peaceful but are uncertain about their relationship to the federal government. The currently control the law through jury trials. Captain Marcy reports that the Mormon women are of a “low order.” The article recounts Marcy’s march to Santa Fe to procure supplies for the army.
