  • A correspondent describes the approach into Salt Lake City and the control the Mormons have over the territory. He explains why Brigham Young tries to prevent mining in Utah. The Gentiles there are outnumbered but will eventually be successful in overturning Mormon rule. The letter describes the visit of Mr. Colfax and another member of Congress to Utah for the Fourth of July. Silver mines in Utah are attracting attention. The Weekly Vedette, a Gentile newspaper, can do much to overthrow Mormonism.
