As a contribution to large deformation-small strain shell theory an explicit solution is obtained for the states of inextensional deformation which 5 exist in ring-sector shells of revolution under the assumption of rotationally symmetric strain. It is shown that these states of deformation form the basis of an inextensional bending theory solution of the problem of combined pure bending and twisting of the sector shell or, equivalently, of the problem of edge and screw dislocations for a radially slit complete shell of revolution. Use is made of the principle of minimum potential energy to obtain load-deflection relations for the sector shell, and the general results are evaluated in detail for the problem of pure bending of conical shells of variable thickness, for the corresponding (linear) problem of pure twisting of conical shells, and for the problem of combined bending and twisting of circular cylindrical shells.
