The Mormons do not appear to be from the lowest classes but rather resemble New Englanders. Brigham Young leads the group with a firm hand and feels he is above the federal government. The Mormons expect and desire continued conflicts between the North and the South. The United States government should be wary of the Mormons, who have established a kind of “sovereign state” of their own. The Mormons have caused the wilderness to blossom like a rose. The women are very plain and generally are opposed to polygamy, but most of the Mormon men defend plural marriage. The Mormons keep to themselves. The mines are profitable, but the Mormons deny it because they fear a mass emigration of Gentiles into their territory. One day Utah will be raw materials and mining country. The Mormons should be proud of their accomplishments—their patience, energy, and perseverance have helped them to transform their landscape.
