  • The Mormons and anti-Mormons are “hard at it.” Sheriff Backenstos has “struck such terror to the hearts of the mob supporters in all the surrounding country, that the people all fled from Carthage, Augusta, and other Anti Mormon towns.” Backenstos and his “posse” have come into conflict with the anti-Mormons. The St. Louis Republican reports that the Mormons are in possession of Hancock County and that the anti-Mormons do not know what to do—if they return to their homes, they face punishment for the arson they have committed, but if they do not go home, they risk the destruction of their property by the Mormons. Governor Ford has called for 500 men to restore the peace.
