William Smith has sent out a letter to the Saints attempting to “dissuade them from listening to the counsel of Brigham Young and his associates at Nauvoo.” He blames Brigham Young and other Church leaders for the troubles the Mormons have had; he hopes he can persuade the Saints to abandon Nauvoo and avoid “the destruction that awaits them if they attempt to follow the Twelve to California.” Smith, hoping to deter further damage, wants the Mormons to abandon Nauvoo and to cease settling together in distinct communities.
