  • By building settlements every twenty or thirty miles, the Mormons are attempting to control trade with the Indians. The Mormons have also driven away a band of Sioux to take possession of Deer Creek, which they are now settling. The Indian agent at Fort Laramie feels powerless against the Mormons’ disregard for laws given by Congress.
