The St. Louis Revielle describes the Mormons’ preparation for a siege. The Mormons are planning to retreat to the temple, where they will have plenty of food and ammunition to survive for some time. A committee of one thousand people has been formed to “bring the Mormons to terms” in Hancock County. The State Register says that Sheriff Backenstos is making a “clean sweep” of the anti-Mormons; the anti-Mormons are increasing in number. The Mormons have declared that they will leave peaceably next spring. General Hardin has set out for Carthage with men to settle disturbances, and Sheriff Backenstos has been staying at a fortified courthouse in Carthage and is denying charges of cattle theft that have been made against the Mormons. The latest word is that Backenstos has left for Nauvoo.
