Notes
  • We model the choice of political leaders at the level of groups within society where leaders influence both the mode of interaction between groups and the outcome of these interactions. Leaders operate at the intersection of the internal constituency of group members and the external constituency of outsiders, and may be chosen for external or internal reasons. We argue that the nature of leadership contests may overemphasise the role of the internal constituency in the choice of leader, and for this to result in increased political conflict.
