Amer J Epid 94: 31–36, 1971.— The information statistic was adapted for measurement of diversity and relative abundance of human illness as an alternative method for health assessment of groups of people. It should be particularly useful in evaluations where the populations at risk are unknown and rates, therefore, cannot be obtained; it may also be applicable where factors influencing health may not affect total disease incidence but may affect the relative frequency of various diseases. Its use requires that illness be uniformly diagnosed according to a standard classification but does not require data on the numbers of people at risk. Application of this method to illness and accident episodes of employees of a large corporation indicates that illness diversity increases with age, is greater in men than women, and is lowest in scientific and engineering jobs, intermediate in management and clerical jobs, and greatest in unskilled jobs. Its variation by sex, age and vocation is very similar to mortality patterns in the United States.
