The worst consequence of breaking up polygamy is that it would take from Mormon women their self-respect and position in the world, which is why Mormon women have not used the power of the vote to ban polygamy. Houses in Utah overflow with children, who behave well and are comfortable, but who do not look as “happy and bright” as children elsewhere. Wives of the same husband often get along very well, and in this respect Mormon women seem to have a different nature from other women. The strangest aspect of polygamy is men marrying their wives’ mothers. Sometimes Mormon women do not “become one flesh” with new wives who are young; sometimes the men are opposed to taking a second wife as well. From a letter from Grace Greenwood.
