  • “Talmage says the most startling event of the week is a national remnant of a tribe of Indians being swept off the continent into eternity. ‘As near as I can tell, the Indians have been fighting against the outrageous, infamous, white man’s Indian Bureau. Our hottest indignation is for the infernal politics which allowed the perpetual swindling and exasperation of the red man. There is something awfully rotten in the state of American politics which exterminates Indians, but fosters Mormonism, allowing its representatives to sit in the councils of the nation.’”
