  • The editor of the Nauvoo Expositor narrates the recent coup against the Mormons, including the causes. After the "mob came out of the timber" and killed the Smith brothers, the "Carthage people... fled pell mell over the country,... fearing that the Mormons would sally out to wreak vengeance upon them for the murder of their Prophet." The Mormons are "struck with consternation," but no one has retaliated. The Governor who is almost free from censure, has a large militia waiting "to suppress any outbreak by either party."
