  • The Mormons had settled in Salt Lake to isolate themselves; however, the railroad increases the Gentile population. The Mormons desire statehood to protect polygamy, but the federal government will not admit Utah without a provision in its constitution prohibiting polygamy. Brigham Young had hoped for Utah to become a state by being annexed by Nevada, but this planned failed. The civilized world will rejoice when polygamy is exterminated.
