  • A correspondent reports on Johnston’s army. The report is accompanied by sketches of the camp, soldiers, and Colonel Johnson. Many animals have died and the Mormons destroyed some provisions, but enough remains to feed the soldiers through the winter. Colonel Johnston refused a gift of salt from the Mormons. They will wait through the winter before advancing on Salt Lake. Governor Cumming has declared his intention to punish lawbreakers. The Mormons are debating whether or not to leave or to submit to the army. A summary of Johnston’s life and achievements is given.
