Everyone experiences anxiety at some time - it's a normal reaction to everyday worries and stressful situations, such as an exam or interview, for example. For some people, however, it can become intrusive, constant and distressing, and lead to the development of an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders cause those affected to be anxious in an excessive way which leads to changes to how they feel, think and behave, so interfering with their life. They are very distressing and are also very common. Around one in every ten of us has an anxiety disorder every year. Anxiety disorders are treatable, however, and learning to understand them and how they are treated - especially the things you can do to manage symptoms yourself - is a powerful way to start on the road to recovery.
