Summary
  • At about 20:35 on 4 May 2010, a Flinders Street to Craigieburn Metro Trains Melbourne suburban train, travelling on the Down broad gauge line, ran into the rear wagon of a stationary Pacific National freight train midway between Roxburgh Park and Craigieburn stations. At the time, the freight train was stopped at a signal waiting for the departure of an Up suburban train occupying the Down line platform at Craigieburn. The driver and 14 passengers on the suburban train were treated by paramedics on site with the driver and four passengers subsequently being taken to hospital. The two crew members of the freight train were uninjured. Both trains were extensively damaged with the freight train being propelled about 30 metres forward from the point of impact. The investigation determined that the driver of the suburban train had passed two automatic signals after departing Roxburgh Park that presented a stop aspect. When passing the signals the driver did not comply with the network Rules and operating procedures. The train was then operated at speeds up to 69 km/h, also in contravention of the Book of Rules and Operating Procedures 1994. The reason for the driver’s actions could not be determined.
