Notes
  • Deterioration of the site following clear felling coupled with difficulties of drainage, heavy regrowth of vegetation, frequent late spring frosts, and low rainfall combine to make successful regeneration more expensive on this stretch of Boulder Clay running from Lincolnshire to the River Thames than anywhere in Britain. Some history of past management is given. Markets are distant and evidence is furnished to show that only a limited number of species, all conifers, are likely to return a profit. The paper ends with a note on current policy and future trends.
