The First Presidency of the Church has issued the First General Epistle of the First Presidency of the Latter-day Saints. The epistle discusses a number of issues: an Indian attack at Elk Horn River, the progress of emigrants who had to stop in the Pottowattomie country, forts that have been built, the state of crops and livestock, the cold of the previous winter, the bishops’ inventory of the valley, public works buildings, and the previous winter’s hunt. Men returning in the Mormon battalion found gold in California, which is now used to back paper currency in Utah. John Smith has been ordained as patriarch of the Church. The epistle lists the current apostles and describes the division of the city into wards.
