  • Although the Mormon leaders have professed an intention of compromising with the United States and abandoning the most offensive aspects of their religion, they have now changed their attitude and are openly hostile to the government. The writer summarizes a sermon by George A. Smith denouncing the Lincoln administration and another by Brigham Young outlining the injustices of the government against the Mormons. He then summarizes the speeches of several other Mormon leaders who discuss similar topics. The Mormons are developing a military organization; the U.S. government appoints inadequate men to serve federal offices in Utah. A discussion of the internal revenues of the territory; a discussion of Brigham Young’s power and the motivations behind his leadership.
