Here we see earlier 20th century University of Melbourne economist Douglas Copland...during the early 1930s he was one of a group of Australian economists who understood that governments needed to adopt expansionary fiscal policies in order to stimulate economic growth and counter the deflationary spiral which resulted from the collapse in world trade following the 1929 Wall St crash...though his support for limited expansionary measures and controlled inflation put him at odds with the conservatives who ran banking and finance, who advocated balanced budgets, maintenance of the gold standard, and in effect endorsed deflationary monetary policy...
