Here we see a queue of people lined up outside the Government Savings Bank of NSW, on the corner of Elizabeth St and Martin Place, in Sydney. Most of the people we see here are standing in Elizabeth St.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/224717518 - a cropped version of this pic appeared in the Sun pictorial on 10th August, 1931. It was evidently taken in Sydney earlier that day, when thousands of hopeful souls queued to buy lottery tickets in the first NSW Government lottery...the tickets were evidently on sale at the lottery office, which for a brief period was housed in the Government Savings Bank building.

Going on the NLA's caption (as it currently stands), I'd initially assumed that this was a pic of a queue of necessitous depositors, who lined up outside the GSB in similar numbers in early May 1931, when the Government Savings Bank of NSW, with the support of the Commonwealth Bank, briefly reopened its doors to desperate depositors who were allowed to withdraw the grand sum of £3 from their accounts...but now I've tracked down this pic in the Sun, I realise that's not the case!
