Mr. Dawes has recently written a letter suggesting that breaking up the existing polygamous Mormon families would impoverish thousands of women and children; he advises that the government prohibit future polygamous marriages but leave those in existence alone, in hopes that the expected death of Brigham Young and the influx of Gentiles into Utah will naturally end polygamy. The author of this article argues that Mormon women, who are already by necessity self-sufficient, would be better off if separated from their polygamous husbands. He also argues that the Mormons will easily replace Brigham Young and that the Gentiles will remain ostracized in Utah. The government, therefore, should not wait for polygamy to end naturally.
