Summary
  • "There has been much debate regarding the role of LSF [low spatial frequency] and HSF [high spatial frequency] in face perception. While most research addresses the individual role of SF scales (using just one SF band at a time), issues regarding the integration of these scales have not yet been explored. In this thesis, [it] demonstrates a novel way to examine this. Using LSF-HSF hybrids and visually guided reaching as a continuous behavioural measure, [it explores] the relative role of LSF in the perception of faces when the targets are in HSF... Findings from this thesis establish the primacy of LSF in the perception of faces. It is likely that LSF information serves as a header for early face detection and orientation (subserved by magnocellular channels and processed in part via a subcortical route) and is followed, by relatively later availability of HSF information that dominates fine-tuned detailed analysis and face recognition (subserved by parvocellular channels and processed in the ventral pathway)." -- abstract.
