Summary
  • Despite the strength of the economy, Australia has high rates of joblessness or only part-time work among families with dependent children. Drawing on data from 'Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children' (LSAC), this report examines the impact of joblessness/short part-time hours of employment and the wellbeing of parents and their children. Of the children in the study, 5% were living in a family with short part-time hours, and 11% lived in a jobless family, and their developmental outcomes were lower than those for children in families working more than 21 hours.
