This is the History of the 7th Australian Infantry Brigade from its pre-formation days as CMF Battalions in 1940, until their return to Australia in December 1945. The 9th, 25th and 61st Battalions were eventually brought together to form the 7th Australian Infantry Brigade, which were headquartered at Marchants Park in Chermside as part of the 5th Division. The AIF were not pleased when they found out that under the terms of CMF service, the CMF could not be sent overseas to fight. This created resentment between the two groups and the AIF called the CMF Choco's, short for Chocolate Soldiers; meaning that the CMF would melt under fire when things became hot. The CMF might not have been able to be sent overseas, but in the 1940s Papua New Guinea and Bougainville were under the Mandate of Australia. So the Militia in 1942 would finally do service outside the Australian mainland to protect Australia. This history follows the movement of the Brigade north to Townsville in 1942, from where it embarked for Milne Bay in PNG on the 9 th July to defend Australia from a Japanese invasion. It was at Milne Bay in August 1942 that the Japanese suffered their first defeat on land in nearly 600 years at the hands of the 7th Brigade and broke the myth of the Invincible Japanese Imperial Force. After Milne Bay the 7th Brigade came under the Command of the 3rd Division and saw action in Bougainville during 1945, where its Battalions fought at Little George Hill, Arty Hill, Pearl Ridge, Mosigetta, Barara and Slaters Knoll, inflicting more defeat on the Japanese until Japan surrendered in August 1945. The "Choco's" proved to the AIF that they wouldn't melt under fire and that their blood was just as red as the AIF's. This book takes the history of the Brigade down to Patrol level to give the reader the feel of what the Diggers experienced day by day.
