Summary
  • This Inquiry was commissioned to investigate 'sexting' in Victoria - the creating, sharing, sending or posting of sexually explicit messages or images via the internet, mobile phones or other electronic devices by people. It investigated the incidence, prevalence and nature of sexting, the extent and effectiveness of existing awareness and education about the social and legal effect and ramifications of sexting; and the appropriateness and adequacy of existing laws. A particular focus is sexting by young people and the appropriateness of criminal sanctions and sex offender registration for this age group. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Inquiry. The report argues that some sexting between young people should not be treated as child pornography, and recommends that new defences to child pornography offences be introduced to Victorian legislation.
