This is the second national workforce development strategy for Australia. Australia has enjoyed sustained prosperity over the last two decades. Real GDP has doubled and employment has increased by more than 50 per cent, while the nominal value of household wealth in Australia has more than quadrupled. Our vision is to realise Australia's growth potential through a highly skilled and adaptable workforce where skills are used effectively to meet the increasingly complex needs of industry, and individuals are able to fulfil their potential. The responsibility for realising this vision will be shared between industry, government and individuals. We are committed to seeking partnership among all stakeholders to pursue this critical national agenda. To enhance workforce development in Australia we need to act across a range of areas: positioning Australia as a knowledge economy through skills development and targeted planning, improving productivity in the workplace, building labour force participation to meet the current and future needs of industry and individuals and promote social inclusion, equipping Australians with the language, literacy and numeracy skills needed for full participation in community life, education and work, enabling individuals and the tertiary system to respond flexibly and creatively to change strengthening quality in the tertiary sector and investing in the tertiary system and workforce development strategies to meet our skills needs.
