A survey conducted by the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service in 1987 demonstrates high psychiatric morbidity and poor utilisation of mental health services by the local Aboriginal community, thus highlighting the legacy of the past 200 years. It is argued that Aboriginal people must be given the opportunity and the resources to address the issue of cultural genocide, which is a major factor in the mental distress evident in the Aboriginal community.
