Notes
  • In Latin through mid-leaf 95a; the rest in the Venetian dialect of Italian.
  • Title supplied by cataloger; lost 1st leaf may have carried one.
  • Judging from similar Venetian documents, the lost first leaf is likely to have included the name of the doge of the period as the issuing authority; in this case, Alvise Mocenigo I.
  • In central medallion on upper cover of original binding: Ioanni Antonio Venerio.
  • Text begins (leaf 2a) with the first of altogether 244 chapter captions: De modo reddendi ius.
  • The text, issued to Giovanni Antonio Venier (previously Venetian ambassador to Rome) upon his assignment to Istria, combines information, directives, regulations, etc.; the Italian chapters (leaf 95a mid-page through 176a) are decisions, dated 1536-1574, of the Venetian Republic.
  • On 176a, formula: Jurasti honorem et proficuum [sic] Illustrissimi Dominii nostri, eundo, stando, et redeundo. In a different hand: Datti in nostro Ducali Palatio die xiij Martii ... MDLXXIIII. Signed: Aloy[sius] Zambert[us], Secret[arius]. On 179a-189b, table of contents.
  • Purchased by LC from H.P. Kraus; accessioned Feb. 27, 1947 (LL 5452F21).
  • Written in Venice, all by one professional scribe, on parchment of good quality, in large humanistic italic; decorated with cadelled red initials. Contemporary red morocco binding, covers tooled in gilt.
