Summary
  • The former Department of Environment and Resource Management, as part of the Queensland Government response to illness reported in fish from within Gladstone waterways, investigated whether there have been changes in water quality in Gladstone waterways during 2011 and 2012. This was undertaken to determine if changes in water quality had occurred in Gladstone waterways and whether these changes were likely to cause or contribute to fish illness. Initial reports focussed on dredging as a potential source of contamination because of community concerns over this issue. This report presents the results from the expanded water quality investigation program which commenced in February, responding to recommendations by the Fish Health Scientific Advisory Panel. Sampling has been expanded to include more sites within Gladstone Harbour and related waterways in proximity to existing industrial developments, as well as additional control and background sites. The results in this report are based on samples collected during the week commencing 6 February 2012.
