Notes
  • This collection, called by the Library of Congress its Portuguese pamphlet collection or the Portuguese Collection, was formed from material acquired by LC in 1927 and 1929 through purchase of the private library of Antonio Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro. It was later enriched by acquisitions from the Newberry Library. The manuscripts of the Carvalho Monteiro purchases were given over to the custody of the Manuscript Division (guide entitled: The Portuguese manuscripts collection of the Library of Congress); books were individually cataloged and removed to LC's general collections.
  • In 1983 the pamphlets were microfilmed, after weeding and arranging by Mary Ellis Kahler of the Hispanic Division, and a guide to the 3602 items on the microfilm was prepared (entitled: The Portuguese pamphlets, Microfilm 82/5800 MicRR : introduction and comprehensive guide to contents). The pamphlets themselves, except for ca. 500 pieces that were discarded, are in the custody of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division.
  • Most of the pamphlets were published in the 19th cent.
  • The pamphlets are arranged in the following categories: Agriculture (case 1); Almanacs (cases 2-7); Art and music (case 8); Bibliography, books, and libraries (case 9); Biography (cases 10-11); Luis de Camões (cases 12-18, 61); Drama (cases 19-20); Economics, finance, and industry (case 21); Education (case 22); History, including Freemasonry (cases 23-28); History--Commemorative works (case 29); Law (cases 30-31); Literature (cases 32-37); Local history and description (cases 38-39); Medicine and other sciences of man (cases 40-41); Miscellaneous and personal, including Children's literature (case 42); Natural sciences (cases 43-44); Numismatics (case 45); Overseas territories (cases 46-47); Philology, language, and orthography (case 48); Polemical writings (cases 49-50); Politics and government (cases 51-56); Religion (cases 57-58); Science and technology (case 59); Societies, institutions, and expositions (case 60); Large items (case 62).
