Summary
  • When manufacturing operations ceased in 2010, the Tas Paper Burnie Mill site became subject to statutory land rehabilitation requirements. A significant source of contamination at the site was the mercury cathode chlor-alkali plant which produced chemicals used for bleaching pulp. As a contaminated and derelict building unsuitable for ongoing use, the cell plant has been proposed for demolition so that the adjacent soils can be included in the rehabilitation program. The Burnie Mill was important to the growth and development of the city. As one of the original structures of the mill complex, a record of the cell plant has been prepared. This report focuses on the cell plant history, function and structure. The report was prepared based on the Tasmanian Heritage Council’s Practice Note No 3 – Procedure for recording a heritage place. Historical photographs sourced from the Burnie Pioneer Village Museum and digital and printed photographs derived from a suite of images captured by local photographer Jessica Turale in March, 2011 as well as photographs taken by Tas Paper staff in August, 2011 and 2004 contribute to the historical record.
