A collection of studio portraits under the title 'South Australian Pioneers 1838', with 'T. Duryea, Adelaide, 1872' at the bottom. This mosaic includes a portrait of Governor Sir John Hindmarsh above 58 portraits, and the handwritten names of the colonists are listed under the ships they arrived in on both sides of the portraits. This studio print was one of seven mosaics of photographic portraits created by Adelaide photographer Townsend Duryea in 1872 to compete with his former employee Henry Jones{7f2019} production of {7f2018}The Old Colonists Banquet Group{7f2019}, commissioned by merchant Emanuel Solomon. In addition to two large-scale mosaics of colonists who arrived in South Australia between 1836 and the end of 1840, Duryea created separate mosaics for each of those years that the adult males photographed by him arrived in South Australia. It is not known whether the original mosaic survives. It was described in contemporary newspaper advertisements as measuring 28 x 21 inches (71 cm x 53.5 cm). Copies were offered for sale in three sizes: carte de visite, 8 x 10 inches and 14 x 19 inches. B 18891 is an example of the latter. Three portraits at the base of studio print have been affected by water damage. Also known as Source 45; also held as B 47455, a Duryea studio print of smaller dimensions (16.5 cm x 11 cm). The latter is an example of how Duryea marketed the mosaics. Copies of the images and an index of names is available in the Family History collection
