Summary
  • This artwork was shown over 23 October - 16 November 2002, as part of the exhibition The Great Library, Room 35, Sydney. - artist's statement.
  • The artworks from The Great Library took their stimulus from three disparate projects: an ink and gesso artwork produced for a group exhibition at The Sir Herman Black Gallery (Sydney) in 1999, a collaborative book with the artist Joe Frost for the 3rd Artists' Books and Multiples Fair (Brisbane) in 1998, and a 3-dimensional book-object produced for exhibition in Cologne (a show which unfortunately never eventuated). As such, the media, formats, and pictorial foundations for The Great Library were germinating as far back as 1998, while work began in 1999 and continued until 2002. - artist's statement.
  • What was The Great Library? It was an exhibition of books and pages from books housed with a fictional 'great library': books, however, without pages, having (most definitely) something of the structure of a book (the hinge and a mass constituting binding and leaf) where the structure is the defining narrative/dimension, not the text or illustration which is traditionally contained within; pages which are hard-panelled not paper. Narratives are structural and visual rather than literary; that is, there is a poetry of form supplanting poetry of text. - artist's statement.
  • The suite of works incorporated 3-dimensional book-objects and 2-dimensional drawing/painting on panels. The placed the artworks within all three sculpture/painting/drawing camps, and was within the traditions, too, of artist's books. Both formats relied on minimal forms, motifs, schemas which were intended to convey an essential: abstract truths, messages, archetypes. In this way, the exhibition presented such works as The Book of Stairs, The Book of the Dead, The Book of Oracles, The Book of Fortresses, or a page from The Book of Das Alle Eine (the Soul of the Universe) and pages from The Book of Masks. - artist's statement.
  • The Great Library concept was premised on historical/mythical libraries (as the Great Library of Alexandria) though the artist might have added further inner-, inter- dimensional, and metaphysical definitions: the books and their pages were intended to act as ancient artefacts, stelae, memorials, as charms, yet could be read as 'contemporary' illuminations.... Perhaps universal forms and pictograms which, if sent into space, might hold sentiments and frequencies to be understood by all. - artist's statement.
