  • This t-shirt helps to document how the Powerhouse Museum marked the 50th anniversary of the Australian independent record company Festival Records, by staging a major exhibition and a concert series. In 2001-2002 the Museum presented a temporary exhibition 'Spinning Around: 50 Years of Festival Records' to coincide with the company's fiftieth anniversary. Festival was a Sydney-based record company with humble beginnings that, for fifty years, survived the upheavals that re-shaped the record business, while remaining uniquely Australian and independent of the five multinational record companies that dominated the industry worldwide. The exhibition presented Festival as a national icon, comparable to Vegemite, Holden cars, Victa lawnmowers or Arnotts biscuits. Certainly, Festival Records has had a similar presence in Australian homes. A close inspection of the average collection of vinyl audio records purchased in this country between 1952 and 1992 would reveal that many of them were manufactured and distributed by Festival Records. The company financed, recorded, manufactured, promoted, marketed, distributed and published an impressive range of local and overseas music, from classical to popular, under an equally vast number of labels. The 'Spinning Around' exhibition contained costumes, technology, memorabilia, musical instruments, images, interactives and audio-visuals. A travelling exhibition, it was seen in Melbourne and Canberra as well as at the Powerhouse, where the t-shirts were available for sale to the public. An accompanying book was published by the Powerhouse Museum. In 2005 Festival Mushroom Records was bought by the multinational conglomerate Warner Music. Peter Cox April 2008
