Summary
  • The following information is courtesy of Peter Whyte (19 January, 2009). In my five years at Newcastle I built the Counseling Unit from a one-man service to five - the largest at that time in any Australian University; and instituted a freshman assessment of abilities and personality features as well as home background information which formed the basis for a follow-up research aimed at increasing the reliability of prediction of academic success in the different faculties (and hence, of initial guidance). One startling discovery was that at that time (the late 60's) more than 50% of the intake said there were no books in their homes other than schoolbooks. This led, amongst other things, to the requirement by the Dean of Engineering that students studying for a civil engineering degree had a compulsory literature reading programme which was examined. I accepted a position in 1970 as inaugural Dean of Students at Hong Kong University and in my first ten years in that post inaugurated a Counseling Unit, Student Amenities Buildings, new Halls of Residence, student membership of University Committees including Senate and Council, a University News Monthly as well as co-developing a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology and teaching as an Honorary Lecturer within the programme. As a Principal Officer of the University I also sat on 35 committees, chairing 23 of them. Since much of this time was during China's Cultural revolution and I was responsible for the development of viable relations between the Student Union and the University Administration you would be right in guessing that i was kept rather busy - a little less than 24/7. I spent the last few years before retirement fostering the development of counseling both in other tertiary institutions and the broader community. Post "retirement" I conducted a private practice as a Clinical Psychologist for ten years. in Hong Kong. Since returning to Australia I have concentrated on writing, self-publishing a novel, a therapeutic diary and a book of essays and photographs.
