  • Aldene, a residence dating from 1890, has historical associations with the prominent ironfounder George Waterstrom, who built the residence, then known as Irona. His company was one of the most extensive and prosperous hardware concerns in the colonies, with branches in Adelaide, Sydney, London and New York. Aldene contains a number of cast iron architectural details which are thought to have been produced by Waterstrom at his iron foundary in Franklin Street, Melbourne. The fortunes of George Waterstrom, ironfounder, the first owner of No 17, Irona as he called it, were bound up with those of the prosperous hardware firm of McLean Brothers and Rigg Ltd, which was involved in the 1890s boom and subsequent economic crisis. Waterstrom was manager of McLean's foundry in Franklin Street. This company was one of the most extensive and prosperous hardware concerns in the colonies, with branches in Adelaide, Sydney, London and New York.Waterstrom began to build his East Malvern residence, Irona, in 1890 on Lot 28 of the Darling Estate. It began as a brick house of seven rooms off Darling Road. Waterstrom also owned adjacent land in Lots 26 and 27. The house was enlarged to nine rooms by 1892, but by this time the property was owned by the Land Mortgage Bank of Victoria. The next owner was William Geddes Borron who changed its name to Waldon. In 1901 the property was purchased by the bank manager, William Lawson Davidson, who changed its name to Aldene after the Aldene Hills in Scotland. At about this time the street in which it stood was named for the first time. It was called Arthur Street and was in the East Ward of the Town of Malvern. The street name was changed again in 1915 to Bowral Street and in 1918 ownership of Aldene was transferred to William's wife Eliza Davidson, niece of H.V. McKay, the famous industrialist and inventor of the Sunshine Harvestor. At this time the Davidsons were acquiring other blocks in Bowral Street, by 1921 paying rates on thirteen lots. The street is now known as Dundonald Avenue, named by William Davidson after his birthplace in Scotland. William also named Alsia Avenue after the Alsia Hills in Scotland. During the 1920s the Davidson's land was gradually sold to prospective home builders but the family retained possession of Aldene. In 1953 Eliza Davidson divided it into two flats, keeping one for herself and letting the other two to Mrs Alison Hogg, daughter of Eliza and William, who bought Aldene in 1959.Aldene is classified by the National Trust and on the register of the Australian Heritage Commission.
