  • Collection represents views from the private library of J. J. Quinn, bibliophile and Chief Librarian to the Parliament of New South Wales. It was presented to the State Library of New South Wales some years after his death by his family. Comprises works chiefly in English and French, together with a small collection of German and Italian works. Also includes 100 items of Latin and Greek classical literature. Date range is 1643-1963. Majority of works published between 1850-1950.
  • There are approximately 300 books of poetry and books about poetry in English and 150 in French. Among the poets represented are: (English works): William Blake, Algernon Swinburne, Robert Browning, Alice Meynell, W. B. Yeats, Thomas Hardy and George Meredith. (French works): Victor Hugo, Stephane Mallarme, Arthur Rimbaud, Paul-Marie Verlaine and Charles Baudelaire.
  • The collection of 500 books of prose writings in English contains works of both fiction and non-fiction. The fiction titles include works by: Henry James, George Meredith, G. K. Chesterton, George Gissing, Thomas Hardy, and Australian authors: Henry Lawson, Dame Mary Gilmore, Barnard Eldershaw and Mrs. Aeneas Gunn. Among the topics incorporated in the non-fiction works are: literary criticism, philosophy, exploration, and religious thought. Authors include: William Morris, William Hazlitt, John Henry Newman, Thomas Carlyle, W. B. Yeats, and Coventry Patmore.
  • Reflected in the collection is a special interest in Irish writing and the revival of Irish literature. The Dun Emer Press in Dundrum, Dublin, founded in 1902, is represented by eight of the eleven volumes it produced in limited editions. In 1908 the Dun Emer Press was replaced by the Cuala Press which became Ireland's most important publishing house. The Quinn Collection has five of Cuala's titles. Three of these works and six of Dum Emer's have been transferred to the State Library's Rare Books Collection. (A subject search under the heading 'Quinn Collection' on Webcat will retrieve these titles).
  • The collection of French prose consists of approximately 250 volumes of novels, short stories, anecdotes, essays, criticism and literature. Dramatic works by Moliere, Balzac and Beaumarchais are included also. Within the French collection is a run of the famous 'Fantomas' paperbacks. Fantomas is the Lord of Terror, the anti-hero of a series of thrillers originally published monthly in Paris by Arthème Fayard between 1911 and 1913. They were written by Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain. The 'terrifying' colour cover illustrations on these novels were painted by the Italian artist Gino Starace.
  • The collection of classics in Greek and Latin includes works by Aeschylus, Euripides, Plato, Homer, Catullus, Horatius, Virgil and Plautus.
  • The Quinn Collection includes works by the Australian poet and scholar, Christopher Brennan, together with works from Brennan's collection. Among these are items presented by Brennan to Quinn and those presented by Quinn to Brennan. Many works contain annotations by both men.
