Summary
Integrated approaches to the teaching of reading and writing being used in classrooms in Australia and New Zealand are described in this booklet. The first part of the booklet presents theoretical background on how children learn to talk and the reading and writing processes. The second and third parts of the booklet describe ways of putting theory into practice, specifically the following: (1) considering, for the reading-writing classroom, five points--time, ownership, process, conference, and resources; (2) immersing children in printed material to demonstrate how written language is used in functional and meaningful ways; (3) providing children with the time and opportunities to write for a variety of purposes and a range of audiences; and (4) helping children make the links between reading and writing. A bibliography and an index complete the book. (RBW)
