Notes
  • This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. In this particular segment, Maria gives an example of a GNU/Linux deployment that is less expensive than the Windows equivalent: web servers. She talks about a study that found that it takes only one administrator for every 44 Linux web servers, but the equivalent Microsoft product required 1 administrator for every 10 servers. She then goes on to give the beginning of a brief history of GNU/Linux. She mentions Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds. She says that the name GNU was a geek joke, due to the recursive nature of the name ("GNU's not Unix"). She say that Linus wanted to build a Unix-like operating system that could run on inexpensive hardware. Then dvgrab, that beast, cuts her off, and so you will need to go to segment 05 to get the rest. She also summarizes why some of the Microsoft TCO studies are not reliable. This segment also has an okay out-take in which Maria is asking me to repeat a question because she says her brain is fried. You never now what out-takes will work, so I wanted to save it. tape id = e-dv177-sf-02_winslow_004.mpg The DTP will be many, many films created by the global open source video community about how open source is changing their lives.
