Notes
  • This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. In this particular segment, Maria gives an example of an open source project that desktop users might be familiar with: OpenOffice.org, which she calls a drop-in replacement for Microsoft Word and Excel. Maria also addresses one of Microsoft's questionable criticisms of Linux: that Microsoft solutions are actually less expensive than Linux. How could Windows, which costs several hundred US dollars, be less expensive than Linux, which is free? It couldn't. That's what some people call an example of Microsoft fighting Linux with Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD). In this segment, Maria takes a scholarly approach to addressing Microsoft's claims that Windows is cheaper than Linux. She says that the studies that Microsoft quote to support its position are based on wild assumptions, and fail to take in account actual practices for people who move from Windows to Linux. She also cites contrary studies to show that Linux, is, in fact less expensive. If you are looking for some nitty gritty business analysis to address Microsoft's FUD "Get the Facts" advertising campaign, this segment has some information that might be useful for you. tape id = e-dv177-sf-02_winslow_003.mpg The DTP will be many, many films created by the global open source video community about how open source is changing their lives.
